Insomnia is a Problem Globally

Sleep disorders - insomnia

The statistics regarding insomnia are truly staggering.

If you suffer from insomnia figures show that you are in an ever growing group.

Here are some statistics which help to show the scale of the problem. The sources for these statistics include The Institute of Medicine, Gallup Polls, and the National sleep Foundation. These particular figures are from the United States.

  • Between 40% and 60% of people over the age of 60 suffer from insomnia
    •  People who suffer from sleep deprivation are 27% more likely to become overweight or obese
  • More than half of Americans lose sleep due to stress and/or anxiety
  • One in three people suffer from some form of insomnia during their lifetime
  • People today sleep 20% less than they did 100 years ago.
  • This is a staggering figure – approximately 25% of Americans take insomnia medications every year

The number of people with sleep problems has increased…

The repercussions of insomnia are not confined to direct health implications. There are also financial implications as well.

  • According to the US Surgeon General, insomnia costs the U.S. Government more than $15 billion per year in health care costs.
  • Statistics also show that US industry loses about $150 billion each year because of sleep  deprived workers. This takes into account absenteeism and lost productivity.
    • Employers spend approximately $3,200 more in health care costs on employees with sleep problems than for those who sleep well

As well as Neill’s personal experience of overcoming insomnia it was the figures in the US and UK (and indeed globally) which inspired us to painstakingly develop Sleepora. Not just yourselves but there are many people out there who would welcome a natural and lasting solution to insomnia. The knock on effects for them , their families and indeed the economy are plain for all to see.

‘The incredibly high levels of insomnia in countries such as the US and UK (amongst others) is an indication that the previous ways of addressing insomnia has been less than adequate, at best. There needs to be new approaches to help people make lasting change in this area. That was one of the main motivations behind the Sleepora app program.

Pumping people full of pills is clearly not working as a long term strategy. People are simply not recovering, in fact figures are steadily getting worse.

As peoples lives are getting quicker (compared to only a few decades ago) with shorter deadlines and a deluge of data which was unobtainable a few years ago, so levels of stress and insomnia have increased.  Just taking medication to address this at best keeps the stress and insomnia temporarily at bay. At worse there is the danger of becoming dependent on the medication without tackling the root cause. This has implications both personally and socially.

Socially this will create a bigger burden on health providers as paying for insomnia and stress relief solutions gets more and more expensive. Taking into account inflation plus the greater volume of people with these symptoms this could mean over the next five to ten years costs to treat sleeplessness, insomnia and stress could soar.

From a personal perspective it may mean people become more dependent on sleeping pills with some of the possible side effects that accompany that.

We advocate the more natural and safe route to helping overcome insomnia and improve your quality of sleep.

Sleepora is designed as an insomnia treatment, to tackle the root causes of insomnia, reduce insomnia levels, sleep issues, and sleep disorders.
